Sustainability

ACTOM is committed to meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs in a sustainable way.

GreenerFuture
Strategy
Our strategy aims on creating shareholder value, and ensuring that all business units are delivering a positive ROCE and employing capital in the most attractive opportunities.

The Just Transition phase offers growth and sustainability for the majority of the divisions and business units. This indicates ACTOM’s adaptability to manufacture and support the industry as it moves away from carbon intensive energy production to natural and sustainable energy production.

Innovation
ACTOM Smart Technologies have partnered with Skyriders, who through the use of SACAA (South African Civil Aviation Authority) licensed drones and pilots inspect large structures remotely. This eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming scaffold erections before an inspection can be done:

Below the types of inspections:

Internal inspections of:
  • Boiler internals - side walls
  • Boiler internal - burner banks /corners
  • Back pass ducting
  • Access shafts
External inspections of:
  • Buildings
  • Roofing
  • Dam walls
  • Telecommunication Towers
  • Tower reservoirs
  • Smoke stacks
  • Flare Stacks/booms
  • Cooling towers
  • Storage Silos
  • Stock pile surveys
  • Mine side walls.

ESTER OIL TRANSFORMERS
Free radicals shaping the future with innovative oil
All transformers produced in the ACTOM Group are designed to operate with both natural and synthetic ester oils.

We retro fill existing transformers with Ester oil in-situ within a matter of days and discard the old oil in a responsible manner.
Breaking new ground in Solar Energy
First PV rooftop installation of 200kW at ACTOM Turbo
The Static Power Division of ACTOM Smart Technologies completed the first PV rooftop installation of 200kW at ACTOM Turbo Machines in April 2022.

This successful installation has resulted in a requirement to increase the system with another 200kW PV installation, which will include a battery for energy storage with a standby time of eight hours for energy storage.

Our focus is to provide other ACTOM divisions with PV solutions. We are about to start with a 1MW installation at Knights for Switchgear.
TRANSFORMER OIL REGENERATION
Returning used transformer oil to international standards
The Denver facility boasts a SANS 555 accredited oil regeneration facility, which returns used transformer oil to internationally specified standards for re-use in transformers. This practice negates the need to produce new oil, thus reducing the burden on the environment.

The facility has a Section 20 waste permit from the Department of Environmental Affairs and all quality tests are performed on site by a fully comprehensive accredited laboratory.
PEOPLE
SETA accredited Skills Development Centres
We continue to train and develop artisans and engineers through our training facilities. SETA accredited Skills Development Centres are based at Knights and Denver, where a variety of apprenticeship trade programmes are offered.

EIT’s are accommodated throughout the business to provide practical experience that enables the completion of electrical and mechanical engineering studies.

Social responsibility

We are achieving this through our socio-economic development investment initiatives.
